What is Gallbladder?
Gallbladder is a vesicles-shaped cyst below the liver on the upper right side of the abdomen. Gallbladder is connected to the main duct (bile duct) that delivers bile juice from the liver to the intestines. The gallbladder stores bile juice and contracts when eating to provide the intestines with the juice that helps them digest fat.
When do you need Cholecystectomy?
Cholecystectomy is recommended when it causes the associated symptoms to stones formation inside it or when it occurs with gall bladder inflammation.
How is the operation performed?
The operation is performed under general anesthesia. The doctor inserts a surgical endoscope and special surgical instruments through four surgical openings in the abdomen (1-2 cm) , one on the upper abdomen [1 cm], and two in the right side of the abdomen [5 mm]. Abdomen is filled with Carbon dioxide, then the gallbladder is completely removed with the stones inside, because if the stones are removed and gallbladder is left, the stones will re-form again, the gallbladder is removed from one of the above-mentioned surgical openings and then the they are sutured cosmetically.
Does gallbladder removal have an effect on the human body?
After Cholecystectomy, Patient lives a normal life and it is rare for a person to feel losing something, but very few people tend to have diarrhea, but this is rare. It is recommended to stay away from fat intake for four weeks after the operation until the bile and intestinal canals are adapted.
What are the benefits of having the operation?
If gallstones are diagnosed and cause symptoms such as pain, their removal prevents the return of pain and prevents complications such as cholecystitis or jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes caused by gallstones escaping from the gallbladder to the bile duct and causing blockage). Also, if left, the probability of stones passing through the bile duct remains, which can lead to pancreatitis.
What are the advantages of laparoscopic cholecystectomy?
- The pain is much less than the pain caused by the traditional operation.
- Hospital stay is much shorter (1 day vs. 3-5 days in conventional surgery).
- The patient's return to his activities and work is much faster.
- Avoid a large scar for open surgery.
- Avoid some complications such as hernia wound.
Are there other ways to deal with gallstones?
Cholecystectomy is the only recommended method for dealing with stones, as there have been attempts to use medications to dissolve or break them up using fragmentation devices, but these methods have proven ineffective due to the re-formation of gallstones. In addition, dissolving or breaking it up can lead to risks due to the passage of fragmented pieces of stones into the bile duct causing jaundice or pancreatitis.
How long is the hospital stay?
Often, you can leave the hospital on the same day of the operation, and you may need to stay one night in the hospital.
What after laparoscopic cholecystectomy?
-You can drink fluids after the operation and if there is no vomiting, you can start eating.
-The patient feels some pain after the operation and may need analgesics, but that pain is much less than the pain after cholecystectomy of the traditional wound and it goes away after a few days.
-You may also feel nauseous for about 24 hours.
-You may feel pain in your right shoulder, but it goes away after about 24 hours. The patient can also bathe after 48 hours.
-The patient is advised to walk and do house activities on the same day, and can return to work about one to two weeks after the procedure and do not mind returning earlier if it is an office job.
-However, stay away from heavy physical activities such as running and lifting heavy loads for two weeks.
-The patient is advised to stay away from fat for a month, but the advice that is always left is to eat healthy food and reduce fat.
